There will be a time that you need to download a file through torrent. There are quite a lot of applications that you can use to download torrent files. But, most of them are not that great. Are you looking for a torrent client which is clean by design, open-source, and kept up to date? Then, you’re on the right page. Let’s look at how to download the best torrent client and how to download a torrent file.

Introduction

We need to download a file, and we see that the provider asks us to download it from the torrent link. So it’s an excellent way to introduce the best torrent client, which we always use.

Before we move on, let’s answer a question that is always asked: Is torrenting legal or illegal?

Note: Torrenting itself isn’t illegal, but downloading unsanctioned copyrighted material is. It’s not always immediately apparent which content is legal to torrent and which isn’t. Some fall in a gray area, so you may find yourself unwittingly on the wrong side of the law.

Download qBittorrent client

Go to the qBittorrent download page and download the version that suits your operating system.

There are 32 and 64-bit qBittorrent installers. Make sure you select the version that is compatible with your operating system.

In this example, we will download qBittorrent for Windows 64-bit.

Go through the below steps to install qBittorrent client on Windows:

Start the installation setup and click Next.

Accept the terms of the License Agreement. Click Next.

Keep the default options. Click Next.

Keep the default install location folder. Click Install.

The qBittorrent client is installed on the computer. Click Finish.

In the next step, we will start the application and download a torrent file.

Start the qBittorrent client. You immediately see a Legal notice window. Click on I Agree.

The qBittorrent application window shows up. The application has a clean and minimalistic design, which is excellent.

In our example, we want to download the Pwned Passwords list from the official Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) website. The website tells you to please download the data via the torrent link if possible!

Click on the torrent file and save it on the device. The torrent file is not the actual size of the file. The torrent files are always small in kb size and contain all the information to download the actual file.

In our case, the torrent client will download 11.7 GB in file size.

Go to the download folder and double-click the qBittorrent Torrent File.

The qBittorrent window shows up with torrent information and some options. It’s great that it shows the file size and how much free space is available on the disk before you start the download. Click OK.

The torrent is added to the download list, and it starts to download the file.

Click on General. It will show more information about the torrent download.

Click on Trackers. Here it will show the servers that assist in the communication between peers using the BitTorrent protocol.

Click on Peers. That’s where the file is stored and where we are downloading it from. As you can see, many devices have the file on their device and share it with the torrent community.

Click in the menu bar on View. Enable Speed in Title Bar.

It’s easier to monitor the download and upload speed in the qBittorrent title bar.

When the download finishes, you can keep qBittorrent running in the background. It will seed the file to other people around the world.

If you are done seeding, right-click the file and delete it from the list. It will not remove the file from your device. Next, exit the qBittorrent application from the system tray.
